NCAA Division I basketball season is referred to when College Basketball is mentioned. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is one of the many college associations deciding the course of different sports. The NCAA has three divisions, classified on the basis of scholarships and facilities offered to the athletes.
Each division or association consists of several small conferences and institutions of different regions. The conferences in 2020-21 for NCAA division I stretch to a whopping 32 conferences. Other associations which conduct basketball tournaments and have different conferences are NAIA, National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), NorthWest Athletic Conference (NWAC), and Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA). In regions such as North Carolina and the Midwest, college basketball is more popular than the NBA.
Historically, college basketball has been the source of talent for professional basketball. Only a handful of players have leaped from high school to NBA and made a successful career. However, some of the stars have skipped college, like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett, and have made wonderful careers. The tendency to pick up college graduates in NBA draft has lowered recently.
Unlike NBA, the college basketball is played in two halves of 20 minutes. NCAA teams have 10 seconds to move the ball past the halfcourt line, in NBA and WNBA, only 8 seconds are allowed. Since the 2019-20 season, NCAA adopted the current FIBA three-point arc of 6.75 m (22 feet 1 1/2 in) at top of the circle and 6.6 m (21 ft 8 in) at the corners and baseline for Division I men's play. Division II and III will follow suit in 2020-21. Several other rules and codes are different but they are minor.
