The LA Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of basketball. They started in Minnesota as the Minneapolis Lakers in 1947 as a member of the National Basketball League before joining the Basketball Association of America. In 1960 they moved to Los Angeles becoming the Los Angeles Lakers. The team is in the Western Conference Pacific Division and currently plays at the Staples Center, an arena which it shares with the LA Clippers. The team nickname comes from its time in Minnesota which is called the Land of 10,000 lakes and they decided to keep the name after moving to LA because of all the success they had had up to that point. The team colors are purple, gold and black.
In their twelve seasons in Minneapolis the team reached six Finals, winning five. After the move to LA the team spent most of the 1960s and early ‘70s in the Finals, creating an ongoing historical rivalry with the Celtics. The Lakers were beaten by the Celtics six times in that period. By the end of the 1960s the Knicks grew strong and faced the Lakers in three NBA Finals, winning twice. The 1980s brought another sustained period of Lakers dominance. From the 1979-80 season until 1991 the LA Lakers reached nine Finals and won five Championships.
Less than a decade later came their greatest achievement. In 2000 the team won the first of three back-to-back Championships, beating the Pacers, the 76ers then the Nets. Two more Finals losses followed in 2004 and 2008 before they found their winning ways once more and added to their impressive roster of Championship wins. In the 2008-9 season they recorded the first of back-to-back titles by defeating Magic then old rivals Celtics, creeping ever closer to the Celtics record of Championship titles.
