The Denver Nuggets were established in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association. In their early years they went through several name changes, starting as the Larks then the Rockets before finally becoming the Nuggets in 1974. As the Rockets nickname was already taken by Houston, the team had a competition to find a new name. The Nuggets nickname came from the city’s mining tradition and the Colorado Gold Rush. The team joined the NBA in 1976 with the ABA-NBA merger. The Nuggets started in the Western Conference Midwest Division before moving to the Northwest in 2004. They play their home games at the Pepsi Center which has a capacity of 19,520. The team colors are midnight blue, sunshine yellow, Flatirons red and skyline blue.

During their time in the ABA the team enjoyed some postseason success. Their best year came in 1975-6 when in the final ABA season they reached the Finals but lost 4-2 to the New York Nets. After moving to the NBA they were pretty constant fixtures in the playoffs in the 1970s and ‘80s. They reached the Conference Finals in 1978 but went down to the Seattle Supersonics. After winning their Division they reached the Conference Finals for the second time in 1985 but lost again, this time to the Lakers.
From the 1990s the team has not done well in the postseason, qualifying only around half the time. From 1990-93 and 1995-2003 the team did not reach the playoffs at all, with another drought from 2013 to 2018. One highlight of recent years was the Division win in the 2008 season and good progress past the Hornets and Mavericks to the Conference Finals where they lost to the Lakers. In 2019 they also reached the Conference Semifinals.
