The New York Knicks are one of the oldest franchises in basketball. They started in 1946 as one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America which merged with the National Basketball League in 1949 to form the NBA. The name Knicks comes from Knickerbockers for the original Dutch settlers of New York. The team plays in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division and its colors are blue, orange, silver, black and white. They play home games at Madison Square Gardens with a capacity of 19,812 and share the stadium with NHL franchise the New York Rangers. For the first ten years the Knicks were pretty successful making the postseason each year and reaching the NBA Finals three consecutive years from 1950, although they lost each time. The next decade saw a succession of different coaches and indifferent results until Red Holzman was named head coach in 1968. The next season the Knicks won their division before beating the Baltimore Bullets in the Division Semifinals. That was followed by a series win in the Division Finals against the Milwaukee Bucks and then beating the LA Lakers in the NBA Finals for their first title.
In the 1971 season the Knicks went to the Finals again but went down 4-1 as the Lakers took their revenge. The team won its second title in the 1972 season beating the Baltimore Bullets and the Boston Celtics before once again meeting the LA Lakers in the Finals. It would be twenty years, though, before the team reached its next Finals. The 1990s were a generally good time for the Knicks making the postseason each year and reaching the Finals in 1993 and 1998.They lost both times, the first to the Houston Rockets and the second to the San Antonio Spurs.
