The Dallas Mavericks joined the NBA in 1980 starting in the Western Conference Midwest Division, moving to the Southwest Division in 2004. The team plays its home games at the American Airlines Center which has a capacity of 19,200 for basketball. It shares the arena with the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars. A local radio station held a name-the-team contest and a wide variety of names were submitted with the favorites being the Mavericks, Wranglers and Express. The Mavericks name was thought to capture the “independent, flamboyant style of the Dallas people”. The team colors are royal blue, navy blue, silver and black.
The Mavs started a little slowly failing to qualify for the Playoffs in their first three seasons. In the 1981 NBA Draft three important selections changed the fortunes of the team. Mark Aguirre, Ronaldo Blackman and Jay Vincent combined to take the Mavericks to the postseason six out of the next seven years. The highlight came in 1988 when the team reached the Conference Finals, losing to the Lakers over seven games. The 1990s were a dark time for the Mavs as they went through a prolonged postseason drought.
In 2000 the team was bought by entrepreneur Mark Cuban who immediately made changes to improve the team. Over the next seasons the Mavericks found themselves pretty constantly in contention in the Playoffs. In 2003 they lost the Conference Finals to the San Antonio Spurs. Three seasons later they reached their first NBA Finals but lost to Miami Heat over six games. Their major success came in the 2010-11 season when they beat the Trail Blazers, Lakers and Thunder en route to the Finals. The Mavericks won their first Championship and got their revenge over the Miami Heat in the six-game series. In recent years the Mavs have had some trouble progressing in the postseason.
