Orlando Magic started as an expansion franchise in 1989 and has achieved some success and had some big names in its short history. The team plays in the Eastern Conference Southwest Division. Its home arena is the Amway Center which opened in 2010 and has a capacity of 18,846. The team got its name from a naming competition in the Orlando Sentinel which was held six months before they were even awarded the franchise. Various names were suggested which showcased a feature of the area such as Astronauts, Orbits, Juice, Tropics and Aquamen. The name Magic is connected to the Magic Kingdom in Disney World which is the main tourist attraction in the area. The team colors are blue, black and silver. Orlando started slowly. In their inaugural season Magic played in the Eastern Conference Central Division but failed to make the playoffs. The following year they moved to the Western Conference Midwest Division and then the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division but they didnβt make the postseason until 1994 when they lost in the First Round to Indiana Pacers. In 1992 Magic selected Shaquille O'Neal and with the addition of Anfernee Hardaway the team steadily improved so that by 1994 they were real title contenders. They scored their first Division win before getting past the Celtics in the First Round. Wins against the Bulls and Pacers in the Conference Semifinals and Finals took them to their first NBA Finals where they went down 4-0 to the Houston Rockets.
After OβNeal left in 1996 Orlando struggled to make the postseason or to progress past the First Round when they did. After moving to the Southeast Division in 2004 and completely rebuilding the team the Magic improved enough to again be in contention. In the 2008-9 season they made it to their second NBA Finals but once again the team was on the losing end, this time to the LA Lakers with the series finishing 4-1.
