Oklahoma City Thunder started as the Seattle Supersonics in 1967 before moving to Oklahoma in 2008. They played in the Western Conference Pcific Division and moved to their current Northwest Division in 2004. Boeing is based in the Seattle area and had been awarded the Supersonic Transport Project leading to the Supersonics nickname. After the move to Oklahoma fans voted from a set list of possible names such as Bison, Energy and Barons. The Thunder name is apt as the area suffers from thunderstorms. The team plays its home games at the Chesapeake Energy Arena which has a capacity of 18,203. The team colors are thunder blue, sunset yellow and navy blue.
As the Seattle Supersonics the team took a while to get going, not qualifying for the Playoffs for the first seven seasons. After that they were rarely out of the postseason action. In 1978 they made it to their first NBA Finals but lost over seven games to the Washington Bullets. The following year they won their division for the first time and again went all the way to the Finals to meet the Bullets once more. This time it was the Supersonics who came out on top to win their first title. Despite being in contention most seasons after that it would be nearly two decades before they got to the Finals again. In 1996 they beat the Kings, Rockets and Utah Jazz before being stopped by the Chicago Bulls.
Since moving to Oklahoma the team has made the Playoffs most seasons and won their division several times. In 2012 the Thunder powered past the Dallas Mavericks and LA Lakers before beating San Antonio Spurs in the Conference Finals. In their fourth NBA Finals they went down to Miami Heat over five games. More recently, in 2014 and 2016 they were stopped in the Conference Finals by the Spurs and Warriors.
