The New Orleans Pelicans started in the NBA in 2002 as the New Orleans Hornets. Owner George Shinn had faced numerous difficulties with his team, the Charlotte Hornets, including demands for a new stadium and fans’ disaffection with him, leading him to relocate his team from Charlotte to New Orleans. In 2013 the team changed its name to Pelicans. The Charlotte Bobcats could then change their name back to Hornets and all history and records from 1988 to 2002 were returned to them. The Hornets name came from its history in Charlotte in a name-the-team contest due to the fact that in the Revolutionary War, the area around Charlotte was a “hornet’s nest of rebellion”. The Pelicans name was chosen by new owner Tom Benson, as the brown pelican is Louisiana’s state bird.
The Pelicans played in the Eastern Conference Central Division for two seasons before moving to the Western Conference Southwest Division. Home games are played at the Smoothie King Center which has a basketball capacity of 16,867. In 2005 the team moved temporarily to Oklahoma City for two seasons due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, and the team was known as the New Orleans/ Oklahoma City Hornets. The team colors are navy blue, gold and red.
On the court the team has not been as successful as fans may have hoped for. In their first and second seasons the team made the Playoffs but went out in the First Round both times. After three years with no postseason action they made the Playoffs once again in the 2007-8 season. After beating the Mavericks in the First Round they reached their first Conference Semifinals but lost over seven games to the Spurs. After changing their name to the Pelicans things have not really improved with inconsistent qualification to the Playoffs. In 2018, though, they reached the Conference Semifinals for the second time but lost to the Warriors.
