Miami Heat started in 1988 as an expansion team. They have played in the Eastern Conference Southeast Division since 2004. The team currently plays in the American Airlines Arena which has a capacity of 19,600. The team name was chosen by competition and entries included the Beaches, the Suntan, Sharks, Barracudas and Tornadoes. The team colors are red, yellow and black. Miami started slowly. In their inaugural season the Heat played in the Western Conference Midwest Division but failed to make the playoffs. The following year they moved to the Atlantic Division but didn’t make the postseason until 1994 when they lost in the First Round. Their first real success came in the 1996 season when they won their Division for the first time and made it through to the Conference Finals, finally going down to the Bulls. Three more Division wins followed but they were less successful in the postseason.
In 2004 the team moved to the Southeast Division and benefited immediately. After winning their Division they progressed to the Conference Finals. The next year the Heat went one better. Another Division title followed by wins against the Bulls, Nets and Pistons took them to their first NBA Finals, and a 4-2 series win against the Mavericks brought them their first national title. For the following four seasons the team struggled with injuries and performed poorly in the postseason.
With the introduction of Chris Bosh and LeBron James the team became one of the dominant teams in the NBA. From 2011 to 2014 the Heat appeared in four NBA Finals back-to-back. After losing to the Mavericks in 2011 the Heat recovered to win two consecutive titles, beating Oklahoma City Thunder and then San Antonio Spurs. In the fourth Finals Spurs took their revenge.
