The Indiana Pacers started in 1967 as a member of the American Basketball Association and joined the National Basketball Association in 1976 with the ABA-NBA merger. Since 1979 they have played in the Eastern Conference Central Division. The team plays at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, which is one of the smaller arenas in the NBA with a capacity of 17,923. The team’s nickname comes from Indiana's affiliation with horse and auto racing and the team colors are navy blue, gold and cool gray. The Pacers were most successful in their early days. In their first eight seasons they reached the ABA finals five times and won three titles. In the 1969 season they beat the LA Stars to capture their first title. Two years later they beat the New York Nets for their second, and the following year they took down the Kentucky Colonels.
Life was hard for the Pacers after joining the NBA in 1976. Until 1993 they rarely made it to the playoffs and each time they did they went out in the First Round. The 1990s saw one of the best periods for the team since their early success in the ABA reaching the Conference Finals four times between ‘93 and ‘98. In the 1999-00 season they finally beat the Knicks to win the Conference Finals and reach their first NBA Finals but went down 4-2 to the Lakers.
Since 2000 the Pacers have had varied levels of success. Postseason action has not been constant and too many seasons have seen a departure in the First Round, although they have reached Conference Semifinals and Finals a number of times. In May 2004 they lost to the Pistons in the Conference Finals and were beaten by the Pistons again the following year in the Semifinals.
