The Cleveland Cavaliers joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1970 playing in the Eastern Conference Central Division. They have played at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse since 1994 which has a capacity of 20,562. Their nickname was chosen from a newspaper poll with other suggestions being the Presidents, Jays and Towers. The team colors are wine, gold, navy blue and black. The Cavs started badly losing their first fifteen games in their first season, losing sixty-seven games overall and finishing 4th in their division. Things improved gradually but it wasnโt until the 1975 season that they won the Division and made the playoffs for the first time losing to the Celtics in the Conference Finals. Over the next fifteen seasons they went out in the First Round six times. In the 1991 season they reached their second Conference Finals but went down to Michael Jordan's Bulls.
From 1998 they failed to reach the postseason for seven straight seasons before selecting LeBron James in the 2003 draft. In the 2006 season they finally made good beating the Wizards, Nets and Pistons en route to their first NBA Finals where they lost 4-0 to the Spurs. James signed for Miami Heat in 2010 and for the next four seasons they team struggled and failed to make the postseason.
In 2014 LeBron James returned to the team helping to start a period of major success with four successive Finals appearances all against the Golden State Warriors. In 2015 the Cavs lost but the next year they secured their first title beating the Warriors 4-3. Golden State would emerge victorious the next two times.
